Phasing out Type 1 Fonts

Type 1 fonts have been on their way out for a while. This might be old news to some. It is certainly not old news to developers doing extensive font work with GDI+ and the .NET framework. But it is still interesting to come across an article about Type 1 fonts from the source.
Here is a link to a 2005 posting by Thomas Phinney at Adobe. He is the Product Manager for Fonts & Global Typography at Adobe. In the post he reviews the technical shortcomings of Type 1 fonts and the switch to OpenType.

I found the article while working with the Printer’s Apprentice code for installing Type 1 fonts. And, as an aside, screenshots of the new install dialog will be posted soon.
